The Country of Cantabria

Cantabria is one of the smallest autonomous regions in the Spanish Kingdom. It is located in the northern part of Spain, in the middle of the Cantabria coast (42º, 46' / 43º 31' north altitude and 3º,9'/4º,52' west latitude).

Cantabria has borders with the autonomous regions of Asturias (West), the Bay of Biscay (North), Euskadi (East), and Castilla-León (South).

It has a 5.300 square kilometers and 200 kilometers of coast out of 600 kilometers of total boundaries. It has more that 530.000 people mostly concentrated (60%) in the Santander-Torrelavega axis.

Cantabria has a good communications system. There are three main roads:

– N-634. This road goes from East to West through Torrelavega. It is already in most of its extension a road with two lanes in each direction or highway.

– N-611. It comes from the South (Palencia). Work is already on going in order to make it a highway. There are some sections that are already finished around Torrelavega, the mountain pass of Pozazal and Reinosa.

– N-623. It comes also from the South (Burgos). It is an ordinary road going through a mountain landscape which is wonderful for sightseeing.

Across the sea the Brittany Ferries link the cities of Santander and Plymouth (United Kingdom).

From the airport of Santander called Parayas several airlines have regular flights to Madrid (Barajas), Barcelona (El Prat), Sevilla (San Pablo), Valencia (Manises), Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Gando), Alicante (El Altet), Málaga (Pablo Picasso), Palma de Mallorca (Son Sant Joan), Roma (Ciampino), Frankfurt (Hahn) and Londres (Stansted).

In this webpage you will find more information about the historical origins of Cantabria and about its political, social and economic situation nowadays. And also about one of its more important activities: the tourist industry. You can click on any of the graphics or on the text under them to visit the page.
